Why I build my clients’ systems with Claude

When an AI talks to your customers, reliability matters more than flash. Here is how I think about choosing the model behind a small business.
Every AI project I take on starts with the same question from the owner: which AI should we use? It is the right question, because the model you pick is not a technical footnote. It becomes part of how your business sounds to customers.
The model is the employee
When a small business deploys a chatbot or an AI agent, it is effectively hiring a new front-desk person who never sleeps. You would not hire someone who invents answers, ignores your policies or gets defensive. The same standard applies here.
“Reliability is the feature small businesses notice — even when they can’t name it.”
What I look for
In practice I care about a handful of things: does it follow instructions closely, does it admit when it does not know, does it stay on-brand in tone, and can I build real tools around it — like the custom software we develop with Claude Code?
- Follows business rules consistently
- Says “I don’t know” instead of guessing
- Writes in a natural, warm voice
- Works well for building custom tools with Claude Code
Where it fits in practice
A typical setup gives the assistant a short, clear brief and a library of approved answers. Everything else is handed to a person. We walk through this setup in our implementation process.
The takeaway
Choose the AI the way you would choose a hire: for judgment and consistency, not for the flashiest demo.
